INDONESIAN COMMON WORDS AND PHRASES

Spending your vacation in Indonesia soon?
There are a number of things you need to arrange and prepare for to make sure your trip is enjoyable and hassle free. Now, you may have already packed your bags, double checked your travel checklist, made your itinerary or found one of the best Bali luxury villas to stay in. But apart from your vacation preparations, there is one thing you might not have thought of.
Ever thought of learning some Indonesian words or phrases? One way or another, these will come in handy when you come visit the place.
To make things easier for you, we share some useful words and phrases you can use when traveling to Indonesia.

GREETINGS/GOODBYES:
Starting off with the basics, here’s how you greet people the Indonesian way.
Apa kabar? – Hello (general greeting)
Hai! – Hi!
Selamat pagi – Good morning
Selamat siang – Good afternoon (from 12 noon)
Selamat sore – Good afternoon (from 3 PM)
Selamat malam – Good evening (from 6 PM)
Selamat tidur – Good night (before sleep)
Selamat tinggal – Goodbye (if you’re the one leaving)
Selamat jalan – Goodbye (if you’re the one staying)

INTRODUCTIONS/GETTING TO KNOW SOMEBODY:
Being in a new place is a great opportunity to meet new people. Learn these sentences to make new friends.
Nama saya.. – My name is..
Siapa nama anda? – What’s your name?
Senang bertemu denganmu. – Nice to meet you
Apa kabar? – How are you? (What news?)
Baik, terima kasih. – I’m fine, thank you.
Hari baik! – Have a nice day!
Santi! – Cheers! (when making a toast)

COMMON WORDS/PHRASES:
It’s great to learn a different language. And since you’re only staying for a while, there’s no need to learn everything. You could do with just a few words or phrases that are most commonly used.
Terima kasih – Thank you
Kembali – You’re welcome
Ya – Yes
Tidak – No
Saya/Kamu – Me/You
Dia/Dia – Him/Her
This/That – Ini/Itu
Here/There – Disini/Disana
Hari ini – Today
Besok – Tomorrow
Kemarin – Yesterday
Maaf – Excuse me
Maafkan saya – Sorry
Saya lapar – I’m hungry
Saya haus – I’m thirsty
Saya mengerti – I understand
Saya tidak mengerti – I don’t understand
Mahal – Expensive
Baik – Good
Buruk – Bad
Kecil – Small
Besar – Big

ASKING QUESTIONS:
You can never avoid asking certain questions when you’re in a foreign place. It would be an advantage to learn some very common questions.
Anda bisa bicara bahasa inggris? – Do you speak English?
Berapa harganya? – How much is this?
Jam berapa? – What time is it?
Apa? – What?
Kapan..? – When is..?
Di mana? – Where?
Apa ini? – What is it?

AFFECTION:
If you’re on vacation with a loved one, show your affection using the Indonesian language.
Saya rindu kamu – I miss you
Aku cinta kamu – I love you
WHEN GOING AROUND PLACES:
When you go around town to visit popular tourist sites or explore the place in general, these phrases can come in handy.
Saya mau ke.. – I want to go to..
Berhenti disini/Stop disini – Stop here
Di manakah toilet? – Where’s the toilet?
Saya tersesat – I’m lost
Bisa bantu saya? – Can you help me?

NUMBERS:
Numbers are some of the simplest and easiest to memorize. Use them when ordering or buying stuff.
1 – Satu
2 – Dua
3 – Tiga
4 – Empat
5 – Lima
6 – Enam
7 – Tujuh
8 – Delapan
9 – Sembilan
10 – Sepuluh

EMERGENCY:
In the event of an emergency, you can use these phrases to get help and attention.
Tolong! – Help!
Saya perlu dokter. – I need a doctor.
Panggil polisi! – Call the police!
And last, but definitely not the least, if you’re asked by locals what you think about the country, this is the best response you can give: Indonesia adalah negara yang indah which means Indonesia is a wonderful country.
